I arranged with Frank MM0HST to spend the day at the GM6NX Stirling District Amateur Radio Society. I walked up to the bus station in St Andrews Square in Edinburgh and took the Citylink 909 bus to Stirling. I was met on route by Frank who drove me the final few miles to the club location in Throsk.
I worked the club when it was using the G14CG special event callsign earlier in 2014 to celebrate the Commonwealth Games when they were held in Glasgow. The club is full of keen contesters and DXers and has a fantastic set up. My operations are generally only portable and mobile with what I would describe as fairly modest equipment, so it was a rare treat to be spoilt with the likes of a power amplifier, an optibeam directional antenna and a rotator.
Frank kindly got me set up and I was on the bands! One of my missions whilst based in the UK is to work South America since I never hear it from VK6 and I was pleased to achieve that today. I worked a number of new countries/prefixes today which was the start of a week where I worked even more from the mobile.
Frank also took a video of me in QSO with Mack VE9ZY who was booming in from New Brunswick, Canada on 10 metres. It’s not all of the QSO but it can be viewed below.
The highlights of the day were QSOs with stations in Uruguay, Argentina, Cuba, Guatemala, the Falkland Islands, Algeria, St Kitts and Nevis and the Virgin Islands.
